What are the three types of product defects?

When you purchase a product or service, you generally expect that product to work properly or perform the service that it promised. Product defects can occur, and in some cases, the error may end up harming you as the user. Manufacturers have a responsibility to the consumer to provide a product that is functional. Errors can occur anywhere along the line of making the product, from creation of the design to the manufacturing process. There are several ways that imperfections or malfunctions in the product can affect consumers’ safety.

One type of product defect occurs during the design process. A poor product design can cause the item to be dangerous to the consumer. These types of defects affect a wide-range of people, as anyone who purchases and uses the product is at risk of being injured by the improper design. Ultimately, the company who designed the product may be held liable for any injuries that occur.

Manufacturing defects, on the other hand, do not come from a design flaw, but are caused when the product is not assembled correctly. The issue may stem from the entire product being put together wrong or from a simple error in one of the parts. If a single part is to blame, the company that provides that part may be held liable.

Liability claims may also be filed when a company fails to provide adequate warning to consumers regarding a potential hazard that may occur when using the product. This occurs in cases where drug manufacturers fail to give a black box warning about the potential hazards of a drug.
