Reviewing examples of surgical errors

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2017 | Medical Malpractice

From prescribing the wrong medicine to errors involving anesthesia, there are many examples of medical professional negligence. In Bossier City, and across all parts of Louisiana, patients who are preparing for surgery or recently underwent a surgical operation may want to familiarize themselves with different types of surgical errors. When these errors occur, they can result in debilitating injuries and, in some cases, the loss of life.

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, there are different examples of surgical errors. For example, a surgeon may perform the wrong procedure, operate on the wrong patient or perform a surgical operation on the wrong site. Although these mistakes are considered “never events,” they do take place and can completely upend a family’s life. Sadly, surgeons make these errors for all sorts of reasons, including mixing up patients’ names, performing an operation on the wrong part of a patient’s spine, poor communication, failure to properly mark surgery sites and carelessness, among others.

While wrong-site, wrong-patient and wrong-procedure surgeries are a serious problem, there are additional examples of surgical errors. Following a surgical procedure, a medical professional may leave behind part of a foreign object, such as a sponge. Regrettably, some people may unknowingly suffer due to a mistake such as this without ever knowing. For victims of surgical errors and their loved ones, it is vital to address any errors that may constitute malpractice right away. After all, surgical errors often result in a considerable amount of pain and suffering and negligent medical professionals cannot get away with their actions.
