How to spot the signs on an aggressive driver

If you are like many other drivers in Louisiana and across the country, you may become frustrated and even angry while navigating through traffic. It may be overwhelming to get caught in a traffic jam while trying to get to an important appointment or meeting. In fact, at least 80 percent of motorists admit that they have felt aggression while driving, according to AAA. Some people take this aggression to the next level and become enraged enough to engage in dangerous driving behaviors that put other people’s lives at risk.

It is important that you remain on the lookout for these hazardous driving behaviors and attempt to steer clear of motorists with road rage. AAA reported that these characteristics include the following:

  •          Constant horn honking.
  •          Yelling expletives and using obscene gestures.
  •          Speeding or racing other vehicles.
  •          Tailgating.
  •          Failing to following street signs or traffic lights.

Aggressive drivers may persistently change lanes in such a manner that blocks other drivers from making lane changes or cuts off other drivers.

Studies show that accounts of road rage can easily end in acts of physical aggression, such as purposely colliding into another car or getting out of the car and seeking a confrontation with another person. Road rage and aggression are involved in approximately 56 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents in the U.S.

If you should come into contact with an aggressive driver, it is vital to keep your cool. Do not return obscene gestures or defend yourself by yelling back. Avoid eye contact if possible. If you feel as though the driver is endangering the lives of others, you may want to contact law enforcement and alert the of the vehicle’s whereabouts.
