What are SHIPS?

If you work in the maritime industry in Louisiana, you may have heard of SHIPS. This stands for Safety and Health Injury Prevention Sheets, and these are a safety contribution from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for the shipyard industry. SHIPS came about because of the unique concerns and aspects of shipyards.

These places do not usually have a safety and health specialist on hand all the time. In addition, shipyards have some special considerations that safety consultants may not have experience with or knowledge of. Due to these things, shipyards often were left with less than ideal safety oversight, opening workers up to more chances of injuries.

OSHA worked with the industry to develop SHIPS. These informational sheets help to provide important safety information to workers. They explain about hazards and introduce solutions. The sheets contain real pictures of hazardous situations you may come across when working in this environment.

It is important to understand SHIPS are simply informative in nature. They do not explain regulations or set rules. They are just to keep you informed and help you stay safer on the job. The basic idea is to boost safety and ensure you know about possible risks and how to handle these risks if needed.

There are SHIPS available for various specific hazards, such as hot work, materials handling, pipe fitting and electrical. The sheet provides information in an easy-to-read format with pictures, lists and resources. This information is for education and is not to be taken as legal advice.
