What can you do to stay safer on an oil rig job?

Each day, hundreds of oil workers like yourself, undertake a variety of physically strenuous and dangerous tasks. Whether you are new to the oil industry in Louisiana, or have years of experience performing responsibilities on the rig, you may benefit from learning more about what you can do to stay safe on the job.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, there are specific protocols that people in supervisory roles should consider to protect their workers. However, these suggestions are equally as applicable to you as you take the initiative to better protect yourself from dangerous accidents. Here are some of the things you can do:

  • Wear appropriate safety equipment: There may be times when you question the convenience or necessity of wearing all of the safety gear recommended for your job. However, it is imperative that you always take the couple of extra minutes to make sure you are protected from elements including noise, exposure to hazardous environments and contact with chemicals. Doing so will not only better protect your health and safety, but reduce the chances of severe injury in the event of an accident.
  • Be familiar with hazards: Each time you learn a new responsibility or are given an unfamiliar task, do not be afraid to ask if there are hazards you should be aware of. Your familiarity with job-specific dangers can help you behave responsibly and attentively to keep yourself and others safe.
  • Participate in trainings: Every so often, your employer may provide or recommend trainings designed to educate you and your colleagues. Take advantage of these learning opportunities and do your part to encourage your associates to attend trainings with you.

If your employer has safety plans and various evacuation or emergency protocols, make sure you understand the details so you can avoid injury at all cost.
